INTRODUCTION

The C8 was the first project I worked on after joining Samsung towards the end of 2016. My role as a lead designer was to design and develop the concept together with the team, under the guidance of the Head of Design and the Design manager. It was a concept smartphone developed around the theme of JOY, meant to capture a sense of optimism, clarity, and energy.

I collaborated closely with the R&D, the Mech team and worked directly with suppliers to make sure every detail stayed true to the original vision. It was an exciting introduction to the scale and pace of designing at Samsung, and a chance to help shape a product that aimed to bring a bit of delight into everyday life.

CURVED EDGE DNA

The Galaxy C series inherits the curved edge feature from the Flagship S series, showing its Samsung Design DNA. C8 introduces also the smooth crest which reflected the market trend back in 2016. While the S series uses metal and glass the C features a CNC metal Unibody.

The C family was designed specifically for the Chinese market. The rise of the mid-range, pushed by every company, brought Samsung to consider this tier strategically important.

UNIBODY AND CAMERA SETUP EVOLUTION

Ultimately the layout selected was metal unibody, more cost effective, initially a Metal frame with glass back was selected for the casing (1). In a second phase that changed to plastic frame with brushed metal back cover (2).

The Camera system was one of the principal selling point of this smartphone, it had to stand out and be well fit with the overall language. Ultimately it was decided to blend it with the metal Unibody and have the two cameras stand out.

INSPIRED BY KINETIC ENERGY

When a wave begins to form, there’s a subtle transformation taking place. Water flows from a state of calm into a defined crest. That moment became the inspiration for the C8’s design language.

The continuous crest line wraps around the entire device. It softens naturally along the sides, right where the hand meets the surface. The line blends seamlessly into the overall form, reinforcing both visual harmony and a distinct signature character that sets the C8 apart.

SOLID GRIP

No parting lines, no separate materials. At that time, this was the leading design trend in the Chinese mobile market. For Chinese consumers, a metal unibody represented clean aesthetics, durability and premium quality. The C8 embraced this with a form, carefully sculpted for a secure grip and a fine texture to ensure it never slips from the hand.

YOUNG, ACTIVE AND ALWAYS CONNECTED

The C8 was designed for independent women leading fast-paced, connected lives. They generation see the smartphone as more than just a tool, it represents an extension of their personality and a constant companion in work, play, and everything in between.

Their lives are filled with internationally known brands, they value thoughtful design and choose products that reflect their style and confidence. The C8 was created to meet these expectations with fast performance, stunning image quality, effortless selfies and a bold yet refined design that feels great in the hand.

The Samsung C8 is the first smartphone to introduce a dual-camera setup to the mid-tier segment. Featuring two advanced sensors, it captures breathtaking landscapes and brilliant portrait shots with ease. CRAZY ABOUT SELFIES

High resolution means nothing without the right lighting. That’s why the C8 is equipped with a specially designed front flash, tailored to deliver optimal brightness in any lighting condition. Whether you're snapping a selfie in broad daylight or in a dimly lit room, the C8 ensures you always look your best.

THE FINAL PRODUCT

The product's build quality was incredible, reflecting a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail. Its enclosure was CNC-machined from a single solid block of aluminum, ensuring structural integrity, precision, and a premium feel. The antennas were injected directly into the housing during the manufacturing process, contributing to a clean and seamless design. Ultimately, the packaging was crafted entirely from recycled cardboard.
