Various earbud design concepts and ergonomic studies

EXPLORATION

Designing earbuds represents a fascinating ergonomic challenge for designers. Over the past few years, I've had the privilege of exploring various concepts, meticulously carving and refining mockups and shapes to achieve exceptional comfort.

Through an iterative process of exploration and refinement, the resulting insights have directly informed the core principles and features of the idol series earbuds and case. These findings have been instrumental in shaping a design that prioritizes a secure, stable and comfortable fit.

HOW IT STARTED

My deep dive into this ergonomics research kicked off in mid-2015, sparked by a mockup that didn't quite work out. I carved then from this ABS piece, a shape that was tested on a diverse range of ears to validate the assumptions of this ergonomic exploration.

TEARDROP STUDY SHAPE

The investigation began with this form as the foundational element. The flat side was initially intended to lie into the ear canal, while the rounded side was designed to rest against the outer ear. The pointed end was directed toward the ear canal, mimicking the orientation of a typical sound driver and hinting at its functional purpose. This initial form laid the groundwork for further development, guided by both ergonomic considerations and acoustic intent.

STEP 1

Building upon the original study shape, the concept keeps its Z-axis rotation (1) and brings a 30-degree angle (2) incorporated into the driver's sound direction. This iterative process involved taking the initial study shape, applying specific constraints, and then exploring its potential through further development, allowing the concept to evolve organically.

STEP 2

Orienting the earbud in three dimensions offers a superior approach, as the resulting 3D angle directs sound precisely into the ear canal, leading to increased grip and a more stable, comfortable fit. The iterative development, moving beyond the 2D rotation of the initial study shape (1), has culminated in this design, the optimal solution for ergonomics and secure fit.

IDOL EARBUDS

The findings from the previous research were then channeled into the Idol Earbuds Series. The Earbuds mirror the design language of Alcatel’s premium Idol Smartphone, which blends high-end materials with a distinctive touch. The concept for these Wireless Earbuds was initially envisioned as a bundled accessory. Subsequently, the strategy evolved to position them as both a bundled offering and a standalone product.

EVOLUTION

From the first version the Charging Case and the Earbuds, went through a refining process which led them to be more comfortable to handle and wear, more balanced in terms of proportions and aesthetically pleasant. This final design direction also brought them closer to the established Idol design language.
