BACKGROUND

On April 2016 I took over the Moveband project, following up a first version developed by our design team. The first version had a length problem, it was initially 2 cm longer (1), making it way too long for the wrist, then the curvature of the band itself, which originally was not flowing smoothly (2) but having a sharp tendency. Another change was the Deco (3), intended to be triangular in the first version, change to a soft squarish shape to convey a less sporty feeling. Another important constraint was the shape of the module (4), curved on top and straight at the bottom.

EVOLUTION

In the latest version were fixed problems that would eventually bring the project into production. Due to tooling problems, the thickness of the band on the top has been increased (1), this to avoid strain and to flow better with the wrist. The groove is now filled (2) plus some aesthetic treatments such as dual injection and pattern on the top surface (3).

HIDDEN DETAILS

In order to ensure the seamless integration of components, the design incorporated three distinct cavities. These cavities served a dual purpose: first, they were engineered to simplify the extraction of the molded parts from the production tooling, minimizing potential damage and increasing efficiency. Second, the dimensions and placement of these cavities were precisely tailored to accommodate the specific configuration and spacing of the module's pins, providing a secure and accurate fit.

HOLE DESIGN

The holes incorporates a specific shaping to facilitate the insertion of components from the exterior. The chamfer, guides the incoming part and simplifies the initial stages of the insertion process. Furthermore, the internal structure of the holes is engineered to provide a firm and secure hold once the component is fully inserted, ensuring stability and preventing accidental dislodgement.

GROOVE GRIP

The internal configuration of this section is designed to interact with the capsule's groove. By effectively engaging this groove, the section establishes a secure grip on the adjacent band. This, facilitates a further inward movement of the band's edge, enabling it to tightly wrap around and firmly hold the module in place. This interplay between the internal section and the capsule's groove ensures a robust and reliable connection for the module.

VIBRANT TONES

The vision for these CMF tones was to capture a sense of pure energy and playful vibrancy. Colors that would resonate with a youthful and active spirit, with the bold and contrasting choices. Each hue, from the zesty Lime to the energetic Tangerine, and the dynamic Kiwi, was carefully selected to be eye-catching and to inject a feeling of dynamism into the product.

THE PRODUCT

The final product was ultimately released in three distinct color variations: classic black, vibrant red, and cool blue. Regrettably, the initially planned dual-injection molding process was not implemented due to cost-related issues that arose during the later stages of development. Despite this adjustment, the Moveband made its official debut in 2016 at the IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung) in Berlin, marking its entry into the consumer electronics market.
